Call for Special Session Proposals

We are looking for scientists desiring to organize focused sessions at the 2013 International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI) being held in San Francisco between April 7 and 13. Special sessions concentrate on critical and emerging topics in biomedical imaging, preferably of interest to a relatively large audience. This year, we are particularly interested in receiving special session proposals relating to molecular pathology (tissue imaging with molecular specificity), computational tools for integration of imaging and genomics, quantitative imaging in clinical trials, and dynamic cellular imaging. Other topics are also encouraged. Each of the sessions is expected to last 1.5 hours, counting between 4 and 5 invited speakers (each exploring different facets of the chosen topic). Presentations will be oral, and only by invitation of the organizers.

We expect these sessions to be a focusing opportunity at the Symposium, establishing synergies and eventual links to relevant communities and exploring the new opportunities that these can offer. A total of $1000 will be allocated for each Special Session to support the invitation process. Additionally, IEEE-rate registration to the full conference or a one-day pass for the day of the special session will be offered for all speakers involved. Session organizers are also encouraged to seek outside funding to provide additional support for speakers.

In advance of the meeting, invited contributors will be required either to submit a paper for inclusion in the proceedings (which will undergo normal peer review), or to submit an abstract that summarizes the content of the talk (which will not be included in the proceedings).

If you are interested, please submit a proposal to Bob Murphy and Nola Hylton containing:

  1. Brief description of the proposed topic, including justification of its relevance to ISBI
  2. Tentative list of speakers (and whether they have agreed to participate)
  3. Expected audience

Proposal should be submitted as soon as possible, but no later than Nov. 1st, 2012, as
the proposals are being reviewed on a rolling basis. We will encourage, but not require, special session participants to submit papers by Nov. 1st, 2012  and they will get full review (with the possibility of being rejected). Notification of acceptance will be sent by Jan. 14th of 2013.
